On August 12, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), led by Commissioner Seok Jong-geon, officially handed over the upgraded Jang Bogo-I class (Type 209) submarine Jung Woon to the Republic of Korea Navy.

The enhancement project for the Jeongunham began in March 2023 and has since been completed, involving the replacement of major systems and successful sea trials. With these upgrades, the Jeongunham joins four other Jang Bogo-I class submarines that have already undergone similar modernization to continue fulfilling critical naval missions.

The upgrades to Jeongunham include the installation and replacement of key systems such as the combat system, attack periscope, and towed array sonar. These enhancements significantly improve the submarine's capabilities in detection, identification, and engagement, allowing for superior operational performance compared to its previous configuration.

As the sixth vessel in the Jang Bogo-I class, the Jeongunham has participated in numerous major exercises, including the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercises, and has effectively carried out patrol missions across the East, West, and South Seas of Korea.

About the class

The Jang Bogo-class submarines feature a conventional diesel-electric propulsion system, incorporating four MTU diesel engines connected to Siemens alternators and a single electric motor.

This setup allows the submarines to achieve a maximum submerged speed of 22 knots and a surfaced speed of 11 knots. These submarines are armed with eight 533 mm torpedo tubes capable of launching DM2A3 torpedoes, with later versions retrofitted to fire UGM-84 Harpoon missiles.
