Description
The BT-3F is a tracked amphibious armoured personnel carrier (APC) vehicle designed and manufactured by the Russian Defense Company Concern Tractor Plants. The vehicle is mainly designed to be used by naval infantry units. The development of the vehicle started in 2010 under the program "BMP-3-based APC design work". The BT-3F was unveiled in September 2016 at the International Military Technical Forum near Moscow Russia. The vehicle was developed based on the BMP-3F (F stands for Marinized, Flotskaya) IFV intended for the Russian Navy`s Naval Infantry. The BT-3F could replace the BTR-80 APC used by Russia`s Naval Infantry. Other countries as Indonesia, Kuwait, Cyprus, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have shown interest to purchase the BT-3F. In April 2019, JSC Rosoboronexport (part of the Rostec State Corporation) and the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Indonesia have signed a contract for the supply of amphibious armored personnel carriers (APCs) BT-3F developed and produced by JSC Kurganmashzavod in the interests of the country’s Marine Corps.

The turret is equipped with firing sight combined with a TV channel, a thermal imaging system for night vision, and laser rangefinder. It has can traverse through 360° with an elevation range from -5° to +60° at a speed range 0.03° per second to 40°/sec. Three smoke grenade dischargers are mounted on each side at the front of the troop's compartment. One 7.62 mm PKT machine gun is mounted at the front right side of the hull, firing forwards which can be operated by one of the front three crew members.

Design and protection
The BT-3F design is based on a BMP-3F but without the turret and the center of the hull has been raised to offer more internal volume for the infantrymen. the vehicle can carry a total of 15 military personnel including driver, commander and 13 infantrymen. The driver is seated at the front of the vehicle in the center and has a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the right and three-day periscopes that give observation to the front of the vehicle. There is an additional crew member position to the left and right of the driver's position, each provided with a roof hatch that opens forwards and a single day periscope in the hull roof in front of the hatch cover. The troop's compartment is at the rear of the hull with entry via two doors in the hull rear opening left and right and two large hatches on the top. The left rear door has a firing port. The hull of BT-3F has a length of 7,000 mm, a width of 3,300 mm, and a height of 3,000 mm. The hull of the BT-3F is of all-welded aluminum armour construction providing the crew and infantrymen with protection from the firing of small arms and artillery shell splinters. The armour provides protection Level 4 STANAG 4569 against the firing of KPVT heavy machine gun 14.5x114 mm caliber at a distance of 200 m.

Mobility
The BT-3F is motorized with a UTD-29M 10-cylinder 4-stroke liquid-cooled diesel engine developing 500 hp coupled to a hydromechanical transmission with 4 forward and 2 reverse speeds. The BT-3F has a torsion bar suspension which consists of six dual rubber-tired road wheels with the idler at the front, drive sprocket at the rear and three track return rollers. The road wheels have individual hydro-pneumatic suspension, which consists of a spring, shock-absorber and an elevation device that allows the ground clearance to be adjusted from 190 mm to 510 mm. An external shock-absorber is attached to the first, second, and sixth road wheel stations. The BT-3F can run at a maximum road speed of 70 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 600 km.
Accessories
Standard equipment of BT-3F includes the capability to lay a smoke screen by injecting diesel fuel into the exhaust outlet, NBC protection system and a fire detection/suppression system in the front and rear crew compartments, turret and engine compartment. The BT-3F is also fitted with an electromechanical track adjustment system allowing the driver to adjust the track tension for both tracks without leaving his seat. The BT-3F is fully amphibious being propelled in the water at a maximum speed of 10km/h thanks to two water-jets mounted on either side low down at the rear of the hull. These water-jets are run from a power take-off to the hydro-mechanical transmission.
