Airborne multi-role tracked armored vehicle - Russia

BTR MDM Rakushka airborne tracked multi role armored vehicle Russia 925 001

Description

The BTR-MDM Rakushka is a further development of the BTR-MD airborne tracked multi-role armored vehicle. The vehicle was unveiled for the first time during the 9th International Exhibition of Arms, Military Equipment and Ammunition Russian Arms Expo which was held from 25 - 28 September 2013 in the city of Nizhny Tagil, Russia. The BTR-MDM is used as tracked armored personnel carrier for mechanized Airborne Forces (VDV) and it is based on the BMD-4M (Airborne Infantry Fighting Vehicle) chassis. The BTRD-MDM is designed and manufactured by Russian Defense Company Tractor Plants. The BTR-MDM is fully amphibious and could be also proposed to the Russian Marine Corps. The purpose of this new vehicle is to be fully compatible with all the range of airborne armored vehicles in service with the Russian armed forces as the BTR-MD and BMD-4M airborne armored infantry fighting vehicle. The BTR-MDM was shown officially during the Victory Day military parade rehearsal in April 2015. In March 2015, the Airborne troops of the Western Military District have taken delivery of the first production batch of 12 BTR-MDM.

Technical Data

Armament
The BTR-MDM Rakushka is equipped with a remote weapon station mounted to the top left side of the hull armed with a 7.62mm or 12.7mm machine gun. Another 7.62mm machine gun is mounted at the front right side of the hull. Two smoke grenade dischargers are mounted to each side at the front of the vehicle.
Design and protection
The BTR-MDM is of all-welded aluminum construction providing the crew with protection from small arms fire and shell splinters. The crew consists of a commander, a driver, and 13 seats for military personnel. The driver is seated at the front of the vehicle and has a single-piece hatch cover and three day periscopes for forward observation, the center one of which can be replaced by a night vision periscope. There is one more seat on either side of the driver and each has a single-piece hatch cover. The commander is seated to the left side of the driver. At the rear of the vehicle, there are individual seats for 12 soldiers maximum. The troop's compartment is equipped with two large hatches at the top and one at the rear.
Mobility
The BTR-MDM Rakushka uses the same powerpack and suspension as the BMD-4M airborne armored infantry fighting vehicle. The BMD-MDM is motorized with a UTD-29 multi-fuel Diesel engine that develops 500 hp. The vehicle can run at a maximum road speed of 70 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km. The suspension on either side consists of five dual rubber-tired road wheels with the idler at the front, drive sprocket at the rear, and four track-return rollers. The vehicle is also equipped with an adjustable hydro-pneumatic suspension giving a ground clearance between 130 and 530 mm, although for normal road travel, it is 450 mm. The ground clearance is adjusted by the driver from his seat and it takes 10 seconds to lower or raise the suspension.
Combat Equipment
The BTR-MDM Rakushka is fully amphibious being propelled in the water by two water-jets mounted on either side at the rear of the vehicle. Before entering the water a trim vane is erected at the front of the vehicle and the automatic bilge pump is switched on. Standard equipment includes an NBC system, fire detection and suppression system, and a heating system for the diesel engine to facilitate starting in cold weather conditions.
