Iran eyes on Russia's T-90S main battle tank
Iran is willing to acquire Russian T-90S tanks, Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Purdastan, Iranian Land Forces Commander, announced today in Tehran in an interview to the local journalists. "Our relationship with Russia in military technology has strengthened. So the acquisition of Russian T-90S tanks has risen on the agenda," Tasnim agency quotes the General’s words spoken at today’s ceremony of opening the Iranian land forces sports competition.

"We hope the relevant contracts will be signed and our specialists will go to Russia to obtain the experience of operating this modern hardware," the General said.

The T-90S is an enhanced version of T-90 Main Battle Tank (MBT) to meet the operational requirements of countries in Asia. The T-90S is used by India. The T-90S is the latest development in the T-series of Russian tanks and represents an increase in firepower, mobility and protection.


Main armament of the T-90S includes one 125 mm 2A46M smoothbore gun, stabilised in two axes and fitted with a thermal sleeve.

The T-90S tank is protected by both conventional armour-plating and explosive reactive armour (ERA). The T-90S is fitted with the Shtora-1 defensive aids suite which is produced by Electronintorg of Russia.

The T-90S has a liquid-cooled V-84MS 618kW (840 hp) four-stroke V-12 piston engine. Standard equipment on the T-90S includes the latest generation Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armour which provides a high level of protection against both kinetic and chemical energy attack, an NBC system, fire detection and suppression system, front mounted dozer/blade, long-range fuel tanks and the TshU1-7Shtora-1 countermeasures system.
