Thai Defence Technology Institute unveils new project T-85 MLRS 122mm rocket launcher system.
Thai Defence Technology Institute (DTI) unveils a new project of tracked mobile MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) based on the Chinese-made APC Type 85 and using local-made rockets of 122mm. Currently, Thai army uses two types of armoured personnel carrier vehicles the American M113 and the Chinese Type -85.

The news MLRS uses a modified chassis of Type 85 APC under the name of T-85 offering new improvements inside the vehicle to integrate the new turret with 122mm rocket launcher tubes.

The new T-85 MLRS is fitted with a 20-round elevatable launcher assembly on the rear top part of the hull. The vehicle is fitted with a modern firing control system which includes navigation and positioning systems offering high level of accuracy. The launcher has elevation from 0 to +35º with traverse being 30º right and 30º left. It has a maximum range of 40 km.

The T-85 tracked chassis which is also referred in China as Type YW 531 H. In 1987, Thailand took delivery of the first of some 450 Chinese Type YW 531 APCs. Thailand has also taken delivery of a quantity of specialised versions of the Type 85 series including a 130 mm 30-round multiple rocket launcher.

With the new T-85 MLRS, DTI offers a new modernized version of MLRS able to replace the old Chinese-made Type 85 fitted with 130mm rocket launcher system.

The hull of the T-85 MLRS is made of all-welded steel. The driver sits at the front of the hull on the left side and has a single-piece domed hatch cover that opens to the left, in front of which are two day periscopes. The commander sits at the front of the hull on the right side and has a single-piece hatch cover opening to the right with an integral day periscope that can be traversed through 360º.

The T-85 MLRS is motorized with a 450 hp. Diesel engine which offers the vehicle to run at a maximum road speed of 65 km/h. The torsion bar suspension either side consists of four single rubber-tyred road wheels with the drive sprocket at the front and the idler at the rear. There are no track-return rollers.
