Malaysian Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, officiated the naming of the vehicle at the DEFTECH Pavilion during the edition 2016 of DSA at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur.

The DEFTECH AV4 light armoured wheeled vehicle was designed and developed in Malaysia and compliance with NATO standard. The AV4 is based on a modular design to meet various roles & applications and incorporated with well proven “Off-The-Shelf” automotive components for ensuring high reliability and easy logistic support worldwide. The vehicle has a crew of three including driver, commander, gunner and can carry up to 8 infantrymen.

The AV4 is a an upgraded variant of the original First Win 4x4 armoured vehicle manufactured by Thai Company Chaiseri Defense. In April 2016, Malaysian Company Deftech was awarded a contract by the Government of Malaysia to supply 20 units of the Lipan Bara 4x4 armoured vehicle for the Malaysian Army.

The Lipan Bara provides ballistic protection up to STANAG 4569 Level 2 (7.62×39mm API BZ at 30 meters) and mine protection to Level 3B t(8 kg TNT Blast AT Mine) under the hull centre and Level 4A (10 kg TNT Blast AT Mine:) under all wheels.

The AV4 Lipan Bara is powered by a Cummins 300 hp. diesel engine developing 2,350 rpm coupled with an automatic transmission Allison 3000 SP. It can reach a maximum road speed of 110 km with a maximum cruising range of 600 km. It has a ground clearance of 400 m. It can climb a gradient of 60%, side slopes of 40% and vertical obstacles of 0.5m It can cross a trench of 0.9 m maximum, and ford in up to 1m-deep waters.

The standard version of AV4 Lipan Bara armoured vehicle is fitted with a one-man open turret mounted on the front part of the roof which is armed with a Gatling gun 7.62mm caliber.
