The acronym “-2” attached to the vehicle name “VBCI” demonstrates that a significant step in the capabilities is implemented on the currently in service baseline. The objective is to keep the best of the current vehicle while implementing enhancements that will keep VBCI at the leading edge of the 8X8 market for the years to come.

The VBCI-2 vehicle presented at DSEI 2015 integrates the 40mm CTA turret in its final design. This weapon system has been developed to fulfill a wide range of operational requirements from IFV to Reconnaissance missions and armoured combat at long range against mobile and heavily protected assets.

The 40mm CTA turret is a breakthrough technology providing VBCI with an impressive firepower. Combined with 2 antitank missiles (ATGM) fitted on the turret, it is ready for the toughest missions, able to defeat any target at long distance. A 40mm CTA APFSDS round penetrates more than 140mm of armoured steel.

Having qualified the 32 tons version in 2014 which is now in production and is entering in service in the French army, VBCI-2 comes with a 13 tons payload.

The additional payload capacity allows enhancing further the Protection level which is one of the key focus of the VBCI-2 platform design. Therefore, the protection package exceeds the strongest standards and its efficiency has been proven in action. No casualties with VBCI despite many engagements and hits on the battlefield. VBCI-2 is fully qualified at level 4A/4B of the AEP55 against Mines and Improvised Explosives Devices (IED’s). It has already demonstrated that it can even reach a higher level. Indeed, it has been tested in ”overmatch” conditions resisting to a Level 4 + 20% blast. For ballistic threats, the standard level 4 is proposed, level 5 and protection against 30mm APFDS rounds are offered as options.

The use of aluminium (VBCI is the only 8X8 on the market using this technology) for its cell combined with appliqué armour results in a global safety system which is unrivalled: Unrivalled thanks to the technology; unrivalled as it is the only last generation fully combat proven solution. The production system in place at Nexter places quality and compliance to the highest quality standards above all other criteria’s. Hulls welded by robots, X-Ray controls guarantee that every single vehicle going to service complies with the demands of our customers. The Nexter production process is recognized as one of the most efficient and demanding. The internal know-how is also demonstrated with the unique Blast resistant type SAFEPRO® seat which contributes to the protection performance to reduce and avoid injuries.

The VBCI-2 design is scalable and can be tailored to the engagements needs and future evolutions. The platform is as well ready to receive Active Protection Systems that will bring further performance.

Obviously, a complete package to protect the vehicle against RPG is available.
