Russia downs drones in 'one of the largest' drone attacks on Moscow Oblast and west Russia.

Russian air defenses reportedly shot down 10 Ukrainian attack drones during night of 20-21 August 2024 near Moscow, in "one of the largest drone attack attempts on Moscow to date," according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin. The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that the drones were intercepted in the Moscow Oblast as they headed towards the capital. Additionally, Russian air defense forces announced that more than 45 drones had been launched from Ukraine towards Russian territory.

Photos and videos of explosions posted on social media purportedly show drones being shot down overnight in the Moscow Oblast. We are unable to verify the authenticity of all the photos and videos allegedly taken during these interceptions. However, some can be dated to this night, though their exact locations are unconfirmed.

No immediate information was available regarding potential damage or casualties resulting from the alleged attack. However, some eyewitness accounts were noted.

Wednesday's attack on Moscow is part of a larger ongoing campaign of Ukrainian drone strikes against Russia, with the air defense system also having destroyed 18 drones over the Bryansk border region and various drones and missiles over other areas, Russian officials reported.

No casualties or damages were reported following the attack on the Bryansk region in southwest Russia, wrote Alexander Bogomaz, the governor of the region, on Telegram. The official Russian news agency RIA also reported that two drones were destroyed over the Tula region, which borders the Moscow region to the north. Additionally, Vasily Golubev, governor of the Rostov region in southwestern Russia, stated that air defense forces had destroyed a missile launched by Ukraine over the region, with no injuries reported.

Ukrainian forces regularly conduct drone strikes and acts of sabotage on Russian territory, targeting military bases, oil refineries, and industrial facilities. Ukraine has previously targeted Moscow with drone attacks, notably using long-range homemade drones and converted aircraft.

Kyiv does not always officially claim responsibility for the reported attacks on Russian soil. However, Wednesday's attack appears more significant than that of May 2023, when at least eight drones were destroyed over the capital—a move President Vladimir Putin described as an attempt by Kyiv to intimidate and provoke Russia.

Such partial information is entirely typical, as Russian officials rarely disclose the full extent of attacks, only reporting the drones destroyed by their air defense units. Both Ukraine and Russia seldom reveal the full extent of damage inflicted by their attacks unless residential or civilian infrastructure is damaged or civilians are killed.
