Ukraine Deploys New Fury Unmanned Ground Vehicle in Russia.
In May 2024, the Ukrainian army unveiled a new ground drone named Fury. This robot, developed in the context of increasingly automated warfare, has proven its worth on the battlefield, marking a turning point in modern conflicts. In September, the Fury was deployed on a mission in the Kursk region, located in western Russia, as part of the Ukrainian offensive. This drone, equipped with four wheels and sophisticated weaponry, was designed to navigate enemy territory while avoiding mines and neutralizing adversary troops.

The Fury demonstrated its effectiveness by crossing an enemy trench, supported by aerial drones and mortar fire, without any Ukrainian soldier being exposed. This remotely operated vehicle used its onboard machine gun to eliminate a small group of Russian soldiers, forcing the remaining ones to flee. According to reports from the 8th Special Operations Regiment of the Ukrainian army, the drone endured several attacks, including rocket-propelled grenades and FPV drones, yet still accomplished its mission and returned to base.
Although the Ukrainian army has previously used ground drones, the Fury appears to be the most advanced. Equipped with cameras and a radio system for precise remote operation, this robot is designed to withstand enemy fire thanks to its armor. The Ukrainian Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, praised the system, highlighting its maneuverability and high level of radio and video communication, enabling effective targeting both day and night.
The development of these ground drones is part of a strategy aimed at minimizing human participation on the battlefield, as explained by Nataliia Kushnerska, Director of Operations at Brave1, a Ukrainian technological incubator specializing in military innovations. According to her, these robotic systems represent an asymmetric response to the numerical superiority of the Russian army and could change the course of the war. Ground drones, following aerial and naval drones, are becoming a key component of Ukraine’s military arsenal.
However, the challenges associated with using these ground drones remain numerous, particularly due to the complexity of the terrain. The developers of the Fury have worked to overcome these difficulties by equipping the drone with large wheels, an elevated chassis, and a low center of gravity, allowing it to navigate through rugged areas filled with shell craters and other obstacles.
During its first mission, the Fury was deployed in the Russian village of Volfino, near the Ukrainian border, as part of an operation aimed at encircling Russian forces. While the bulk of the Ukrainian army seeks to consolidate the territorial gains made in August, drones like the Fury counter Russian reinforcements and strengthen Ukraine's position in this strategic region.
The emergence and use of these new ground drones highlight the rapid development of military technologies in Ukraine, which seeks to reduce risks for its soldiers while maximizing its effectiveness on the battlefield.
