Ukraine Seeks to Strengthen Its Defense Production Following Trump's Election in United States.
Ukraine is accelerating its defense production capabilities as part of its strategic efforts to enhance the operational capacity of its armed forces. President Volodymyr Zelensky recently outlined the country’s progress and ambitions during an address to Ukraine’s parliament, highlighting the increase in the production of artillery ammunition, long-range weapons, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This announcement comes shortly after the election of Donald Trump in the United States, whose support for Ukraine appears less committed than that of his predecessor.

Since the beginning of 2024, Ukraine has reportedly manufactured 2.5 million units of artillery and mortar ammunition, ranging from 60mm to 155mm calibers. This remarkable accomplishment stands out in a context where the country's pre-war production capacity was nearly non-existent. President Zelensky described this development as transformative, emphasizing that Ukraine has built its ammunition production infrastructure almost entirely from scratch in less than three years. He also noted that this capacity is expected to grow further with continued support from international partners, although specific details about future production targets have not been disclosed.
In addition to artillery production, Ukraine is prioritizing the development of long-range strike capabilities. Plans are underway to produce 3,000 cruise missiles and jet-powered strike drones. Among the key systems mentioned by Zelensky is the R-360 Neptune anti-ship missile, which is currently being modified to extend its range and enhance its effectiveness. The production of these modernized systems is steadily increasing, reflecting Ukraine's focus on adapting its arsenal to the demands of modern warfare.
The development of drones constitutes another pillar of Ukraine's defense strategy. Zelensky announced plans to produce at least 30,000 long-range drones over the coming year. These drones, capable of striking targets over 1,000 kilometers away, are envisioned as essential substitutes for artillery, cruise missiles, and ballistic weapons, addressing current shortages. Their strategic importance lies in their ability to provide a more flexible and effective response to evolving battlefield challenges.
Ukraine’s defense industry, composed of more than 600 domestic companies employing approximately 300,000 individuals, plays a central role in these advancements. Additionally, over 40 foreign defense companies are planning to establish operations in Ukraine, further strengthening the country’s defense sector. These partnerships are expected to increase Ukraine’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing while fostering international collaboration in the face of ongoing challenges.
The increase in the production of artillery systems, long-range weaponry, and advanced drones demonstrates Ukraine’s commitment to modernizing its defense capabilities, ensuring that its armed forces remain resilient in the ongoing conflict. This announcement comes at a critical time, as discussions about potential U.S. disengagement gain momentum. Ukraine must develop alternative sources of military support, such as increased European assistance or, as seen here, local development of its military production.
