US Air Force B-2 Spirit Stealth Bombers Strike Houthi Targets in Yemen.

On October 16, the U.S. Air Force (USAF) executed a precision strike targeting five underground weapons storage facilities in Houthi-controlled Yemen. The mission, employing B-2 Spirit stealth bombers based at Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, was announced by the 131st Bomb Wing on November 22.

The B-2 Spirit provides the United States with unmatched stealth capabilities, enabling it to penetrate heavily defended airspace undetected and strike high-value targets with precision. Its long-range reach and advanced weapons systems make it a strategic asset for missions requiring minimal collateral damage and maximum effectiveness. The decision to use the B-2 against Houthi-controlled underground weapons facilities reflects its ability to neutralize critical threats while mitigating risks to personnel and resources.

The B-2 Spirit, developed by Northrop Grumman, represents a cornerstone of the United States' long-range strike capabilities. Known for its advanced stealth technology, the aircraft is designed to evade sophisticated air defense systems, underscoring its critical role in ensuring national security and strategic deterrence.

The operation was coordinated with the 509th Bomb Wing and the Joint-Global Strike Operations Center (J-GSOC), showcasing the significance of the B-2 Spirit as the only stealth bomber in service worldwide. The mission involved collaboration among active-duty Airmen, Air National Guard personnel, and civilian contractors, reflecting the seamless integration of diverse resources.

“This mission demonstrates the readiness of our Airmen and aircraft to respond at a moment’s notice,” stated Maj. Gen. Jason R. Armagost, commander of the 8th Air Force and J-GSOC. Leveraging the B-2’s advanced stealth capabilities, long-range precision weaponry, and survivability, the aircraft successfully penetrated heavily defended airspace to neutralize critical targets.

The mission's complexity necessitated comprehensive planning, including airspace coordination, aerial refueling, and detailed intelligence analysis. Planners at J-GSOC ensured the smooth execution of this CONUS-based strike, highlighting the extensive coordination required for such operations.

At Whiteman Air Force Base, the mission emphasized the critical partnership between the active-duty 509th Bomb Wing and the Missouri Air National Guard’s 131st Bomb Wing. From maintenance and logistics to tactical execution, personnel worked in unison to ensure mission success. The 157th Air Operations Group and the 257th Combat Operations Flight from Jefferson Barracks Air National Guard Station in St. Louis provided additional support.

“This operation was a testament to the dedication and professionalism of the entire team,” said Col. Keith J. Butler, commander of the 509th Bomb Wing. “Team Whiteman demonstrated precision and excellence, delivering on our nation’s call with unmatched performance.”

Col. Jared Kennish, commander of the 131st Bomb Wing, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the critical role of Missouri Guard Airmen in every aspect of the mission. Their combined efforts underscored the effectiveness of the partnership between active-duty and Guard components.

The operation reaffirmed the strategic importance of the B-2 Spirit in U.S. defense strategy. Its stealth capabilities, cutting-edge weapons systems, and ability to execute long-range missions make it one of the most versatile and formidable aircraft in the world.

This mission also underscored the readiness and agility of the U.S. military to act decisively in defense of national interests. “Whether tasked with strategic deterrence or global precision strikes, the Joint-Global Strike Operations Center remains ready to respond,” emphasized Maj. Gen. Armagost.

The successful execution of this strike highlighted the U.S.’s capability to project power globally, sending a clear message to adversaries while reaffirming the critical role of the B-2 Spirit in maintaining strategic deterrence.
