The Kurganets is a new platform designed and developed by the Russian Defense Company Kurgan Machine-Building Plant to create a new family of light tracked armoured vehicle. The Kurganets-25 BMP is the IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) variant of the Kurganets family. The Kurganets-25 could replaced the BMP IFV family currently in use by the Russian armed forces. In January 2014, the Russian Ministry of Defense has announced that the Russian army ground forces plan to renew 70% of its fleet with new armoured and main battle tanks for 2020. Russia will acquire the new main battle tank Armata, the wheeled armoured Boomerang and the new infantry fighting vehicle Kurganets-25. The Kurganets-25 was unveiled for the first time during a closed showing for the Russian leadership at the defense exhibition Russian Arms Expo 2013 in Nizhny Tagil. The Kurganets-25 BMP was showed for the first time to the public during the military parade of the Victory Day in Moscow, May 9, 2015.

Kurganmashzavod reported a net loss increase of 30 times in 2017 against 2016 which comprised 108.245 billion rubles. Income of the enterprise grew 6 percent and comprised 19.7 bln rubles. "Like in the previous year the financial performance deteriorated mostly because of major expenses to form estimated liabilities for legal claims and reserves for doubtful debts, as well as reserves for depreciation of financial investments," it said. The enterprise plans 33.77-billion ruble income in 2018
