M ATV MRAP All Terrain Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle Oshkosh United States 925 001

Description

The M-ATV is an American-made wheeled combat vehicle in the category of MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) designed by the company Oshkosh Defense to meet the U.S. Armed Services’ urgent need requirement for a well-protected vehicle that can thrive in operations in Afghanistan’s rugged and mountainous off-road terrain. The M-ATV (MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle) entered service with the US Army in 2009. Oshkosh Defense is committed to providing the best protection and mobility to U.S. soldiers – through the most threatening terrain, in the most treacherous of circumstances. They deserve a vehicle that is engineered specifically for their difficult missions – to move them in and get them out as safely as possible. They deserve the Oshkosh® M-ATV. The Oshkosh M-ATV is designed to meet the U.S. Armed Services’ urgent need requirement for a well-protected vehicle that can thrive in operations on Afghanistan’s rugged and mountainous off-road terrain. In addition to meeting these mobility demands, the Oshkosh M-ATV provides the superior crew protection that military forces need by incorporating an armor system from Plasan North America, which developed the armor system in use on more than 5,000 current MRAP vehicles and for the Armored Cab Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacements (MTVR) in Iraq and Afghanistan. The US Department of Defense (DoD) has begun deploying mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) all-terrain vehicles (M-ATVs) to Afghanistan in October 2009 and now expects to order more systems beyond its recent 5,244 requirements. These armored trucks are urgently needed to provide troops in Afghanistan with the same blast protection as heavier MRAPs but with increased mobility to handle the difficult terrain there. According to video and pictures released on Internet, the United States has delivered an undisclosed number of M-ATVs to Ukrainian armed forces.

M-ATV MRAP variants:

- M1245: is designed for Special Operations forces and includes features such as enhanced suspension, improved mobility, and a higher power-to-weight ratio.
- M1249: is designed for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) missions and includes specialized equipment for detecting and neutralizing improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
- M1267: is designed for medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) missions and includes a litter system, medical equipment, and space for medical personnel.

Technical Data

Armament
The Oshkosh M-ATV can be fitted with a variety of remote-controlled weapon stations. The M-ATV's Oshkosh roof-mounted turret is capable of mounting either an M240 machine gun, a Mk 19 grenade launcher or, a BGM-71 TOW Anti-tank guided missile, all of which can be operated either from the turret or remotely inside the cabin.
Design and protection
The M-ATV has a traditional layout with the engine at the front of the vehicle and the crew compartment in the middle and rear. The vehicle can accommodate up to five passengers in addition to the driver and co-driver. The crew compartment is protected by an armored shell and includes gun ports for added situational awareness and defense. The Oshkosh M-ATV provides the superior crew protection that military forces need by incorporating an armor system from Plasan North America, which developed the armor system in use on more than 5,000 current MRAP vehicles and for the Armored Cab Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacements (MTVR) in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Oshkosh M-ATV uses The V-shaped Plasan armored hull, which offers protection for the occupants against IED (Improvised Explosive Devices) attacks.
Mobility
The Oshkosh M-ATV is powered by a Caterpillar C7, 370 hp coupled to an Allison 3500 SP transmission and a Transfer Case Marmon Herrington. It's a 4x4 chassis vehicle. The Oshkosh M-ATV incorporates rugged, durable, patented components and systems for maximum Warfighter mobility and survivability. Derived from the Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR) platform, the M-ATV incorporates the proprietary TAK-4® independent suspension system with battle-tested technology. It has wheel travel, payload capacity, side slope stability, vehicle durability, extreme mobility, and necessary Warfighter protection for today’s fight. In today’s most challenging battle zones, the M-ATV is the combat-tested, mobile, survivable, durable solution – to get Warfighters to the fight and back again. The only solution is the Oshkosh® M-ATV. The vehicle can also take a 7.62 mm round to its engine oil/coolant/hydraulic system and continue to drive for at least one kilometer. The vehicle can reach a maximum road speed of 105 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 650 km
Combat Equipment
The Oshkosh M-ATV is equipped with centrally inflated run-flat tires to allow the M-ATV to travel at least 30 miles at 30mph even if two tires lose pressure. The M-ATV Oshkosh also features modern vehicle safety systems such as Traction control and anti-lock brakes in addition to modern creature comforts such as an HVAC system and power outlets for charging personal portable electronic devices such as iPods and MP3 players.. The Oshkosh M-ATV is air-portable by C-130, CH-53, CH-47.
