Description

The Sherpa XL is a member of the Sherpa family 4x4 armoured vehicle personnel carrier (APC) developed and manufactured by the French Company ARQUUS, previously named Renault Trucks Defense. Compared with the Sherpa Light APC, it is an extended chassis version with four lateral doors. The internal volume is bigger than the Sherpa light offering the possibility to carried 10 military or police personnel. The Sherpa XL APC was unveiled by Renault Trucks Defense in November 2013 during the Homeland Security Exhibition Milipol in Paris, France. The Sherpa XL APC can be used for a full range of law enforcement missions such as counter-terrorism, C2, or assault tasks. It can accommodate up to 8 police officers with equipment, in addition to the crew. The Sherpa XL APC can be easily transported by military transport aircraft as C-130 or A-400M.

Variants:

-Sherpa light APC: The Sherpa Light and the Sherpa are 4x4 vehicles all terrains mainly dedicated to projection, intervention and logistic units. It has a weight from 10.2 to 10.9 tons.
- Sherpa Light Station Wagon: a Sherpa light version specially adapted to carried weapon station mounted on the roof of the hull.
- Sherpa Light Scout: a Sherpa light version short chassis with two doors on each side and one cargo area at the rear.
- Sherpa Light SF Special Forces: This version was especially designed to offer high-mobility and firepower for Special Forces Units. This vehicle is ideally suited for long-range, off-road patrols.
- Sherpa Weapon System Carrier: the rear part is adapted to carry heavy weapon stations as anti-tank guided missile system.
- Sherpa Light Carrier: Sherpa Light with one crew cabin for two people at the front of the vehicle and a cargo area at the rear.

Armament

The Sherpa XL APC can be fitted with a ring mount weapon station or manual turret with open roof armed with one machine gun up to 12.7mm caliber. The vehicle can be also fitted with a remotely weapon station which can be armed with an automatic cannon up to 20mm caliber.

Design and protection

The layout of the Sherpa XL APC is very similar to the standard Sherpa Light with the engine at the front, crew in the middle and troops compartment at the rear. Sherpa XL can carry a total of 10 military or security personnel including driver and commander. The troop's compartment has an 11m³ internal space ideally suitable to carried 8 infantrymen fully equipped. The troops are seated on individual anti-mine blast seats four down each side facing inwards and there is two more seats to the immediate rear of the commander and driver. There are two doors on each side of the hull and the troops can also enter and leave the Sherpa XL via a double door without a central pillar in the rear of the hull, which opens outwards. There is three firing ports and three small bulletproof windows on each side of the hull. Sherpa XL has a weight from 11 to 16 tons with a maximum payload of 2,500 kg. The Sherpa XL APC can be fitted with armor protection up to Level 3 STANAG 4569 offering protection against firing of small arms 7.62×51mm caliber AP (Armor-Piercing). An armor kit can be used to increase the ballistic protection of the vehicle.

Mobility

The Sherpa XL APC is motorized with Renault MD-5 4 cylinders Diesel engine Euro V developing 215 hp. at 2,300 rpm. The engine is coupled to an Allison S2500 automatic gearbox with 6 forward and 1 reverse speeds. The vehicle can run at a maximum speed of 110 km/h with a maximum cruising range. The Sherpa XL APC can cross a water depth of 0.75 m without preparation and 1.5 m with preparation. It can negotiate a vertical obstacle of 0.5 m maximum, a gradient of 60%, a slide slope of 40% and a trench of 0.9 m maximum.

Accessories

Standard equipment of the Sherpa XP APC includes electric winch mounted at the front of the vehicle and air conditioning. In option, the vehicle can be fitted with a full range of equipment including a Central Tire Inflation System, run-flat tires system, dozer-blade, fire extinguishing system, light bars and more. Renault Trucks Defense has also developed a version of the Sherpa XL APC fitted with an assault ladder mounted on the roof of the vehicle. The Assault Ladder is designed to support a special team during counter-terrorism, hostage rescue or police missions. Ten police officers have access to the roof of a vehicle thanks to a ladder and large platform with safety features including non-slip floor, handrail and armour protection on shield ramps. A hydraulic ramp allows easy access to elevated targets like buildings and commercial planes or to cross a wall. The modular platform and ramps allow various configurations depending on the team’s strategy and the target location.
