Bell-Boeing wins a $138mn contract to develop Japan's MV-22B Block C tiltrotor aircraft
 
Bell-Boeing has been awarded a $138mn contract in support of the MV-22B Block C tiltrotor aircraft ordered in 2015 by the government of Japan, the US DoD announced on January 13. "This modification provides for the procurement of non-recurring engineering in support of the development, qualification test, integration, airworthiness substantiation, flight test demonstration, validation/verification and incorporation of the government of Japan (GOJ) configuration into MV-22B Block C," the US DoD said.

This also provides for the procurement of the d the MV-22 containerized flight training device. "Additionally, kits for the government of Japan unique configuration will be procured as part of this effort," the US DoD added. Work will be performed in various US places and is to be completed by December 2019.

In May 2015, the U.S. State Department gave its green light to a possible Foreign Military Sale to Japan for 17 MV-22B Block C Osprey tiltrotor aircraft and associated equipment, parts and logistical support for an estimated cost of $3 billion. Besides Osprey platforms, , this contract includes AN/AAQ-27 Forward Looking InfraRed Radars, AN/AAR-47 Missile Warning Systems, AN/APR-39 Radar Warning Receivers, AN/ALE-47 Countermeasure Dispenser Systems, AN/APX-123 Identification Friend or Foe Systems and Night Vision Goggles.

Japan ordered its first five MV-22Bs in July 2015 for $332.5 million, with deliveries to take place by June 2018. A second batch of four Ospreys was contracted in July 2016.

According the Japanese Ministry of Defense, the 17 MV-22Bs will equip an amphibious unit of two expeditionary divisions and two brigades to allow the JSDF to better react in case of any invasion of any remote islands.
