CETC successfully launches record-breaking drone swarm

China has launched a swarm of 119 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), breaking the previous record of a swarm of 67 drones, according to the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC). The 119 drones performed catapult-assisted take-offs and formations in the sky, the Xinhua news agency said on June 11.

According to the CETC, "swarm intelligence" is regarded as the core of artificial intelligence of unmanned systems and the future of intelligent unmanned systems.

Zhao Yanjie, an engineer with CETC, said that since drones were invented in 1917, intelligent swarms have become a disruptive force to "change rules of the game."

Reports in the Chinese official media in the recent past said Chinese military is also testing to launch mass armed drones as a new technique in battle conditions.

China is currently the largest drones maker in the world.

In January 2017, the US Department of Defense Strategic Capabilities Office announced it successfully demonstrated a large micro-drone swarm with 103 Perdix drones launched from three F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets. The demonstration was one of the first examples of military using teams of small, inexpensive, autonomous systems to perform missions once achieved only by large, expensive ones.
