NATO Selects Airbus to Pilot Next-Generation Multi-Role Rotorcraft Study Project.

Airbus Helicopters has been selected by the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) to lead a crucial concept study for the Next Generation Rotorcraft Capability (NGRC) project. This initiative marks a collaborative effort to design, develop, and deliver a cutting-edge medium multi-role helicopter.

The 13-month study, a partnership between Airbus and companies such as Collins Aerospace and Raytheon from RTX, as well as MBDA, aims to explore two integrated rotorcraft designs that could redefine future military operations. This project will examine various high-performance capabilities, focusing on modularity, multi-mission flexibility, and full interoperability with NATO standards.

Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, highlighted the dual objectives of the project: to meet NATO's operational needs and ensure European industrial sovereignty. "This study leverages our extensive experience with European armed forces to develop a robust European solution that maintains critical engineering skills and industrial independence," stated Even.

The NGRC study reflects NSPA’s commitment to leveraging broad industry expertise by initiating three parallel contracts through a competitive process. "The launch of Concept Study #5 is a key milestone in the NGRC's concept phase, highlighting our dedication to addressing the challenge of next-generation medium lift for participating nations," said NSPA General Manager, Ms. Stacy A. Cummings.

France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, Ireland, and Italy are participating in the project, each contributing through various partner companies in areas such as helicopter design, systems integration, and advanced weaponry. The study promises to yield a variety of potential solutions that will enhance the capabilities and integration of future rotorcraft within the NATO framework.

Airbus' portfolio, trusted by over 140 armed forces worldwide, includes a range of dual-use and military-specific helicopters such as the H225M, H145M, Tiger, and NH90. Additionally, Airbus is advancing its unmanned systems and exploring the capabilities of manned-unmanned teaming, positioning itself as a leader in modern military aviation technology.

The NSPA, headquartered in Luxembourg with major operational centers across Europe, continues to be a cornerstone of NATO's efforts in multinational acquisition, support, and sustainment across all defense domains.
