"Almaz-Antey has delivered the third regiment-size S-400 Triumph air defense missile system set to the Russian Defense Ministry in line with its defense procurement program commitments for this year. This has been the 11th regimental sets delivered since the S-400’s production began," the manufacturer says in its message received by TASS.
"In accordance with the 2016 schedule, we will supply the Defense Ministry with five regiments sets of S-400 AD systems," the press release added. Thus, the Russian Army will have had a total of 16 S-400 regiments by late 2016. Russia deployed an S-400 to Syria to provide air defense for the Russian aircraft attacking terrorist groups there. The decision had been made after the Turkish Air Force’s downing of a Sukhoi Su-24 (Fencer) tactical bomber. In addition, Almaz-Antey has supplied the Russian Army with three battalion-size sets of Buk-M2 (SA-17 Grizzly) medium-range AD missile systems in 2015. "This year, the corporation has delivered three battalion-sized sets of Buk-M2 medium-range AD systems this year. Thus, it has fulfilled its 2015 contractual obligations to the Russian Defense Ministry as far as Buk-M2 deliveries are concerned," the news release said. The Buk-M2 was developed in 1988, but its full-scale production began 15 years later. Now, the system is regarded as one of the best in its class. As was reported in the press, a new variant, the Buk-M3, will have entered service before year-end 2015, with its range standing at 70 km (a 25 increase over the Buk-M2’s range) and its maximum altitude being 35 km. The S-400 Triumph is a Russian long/medium-range AD missile system designed to eliminate all current and in-development aircraft and air-launched weapons. It can take on aerodynamic targets (cruise missiles and strategic and tactical aircraft) at a range of 400 km and 4.8-km/s battlefield ballistic targets (warheads) out to 60 km. The Triumph’s radars have a target acquisition range of 600 km and its 48N6E3 missiles can reach aircraft flying at an altitude of 10-27,000 m and ballistic missile warheads at 2-25,000 m. |
