The KBP Epokha fighting module equipping the latest Russian infantry fighting vehicles on the Armata, Kurganets-25 and Boomerang chasses has been given reinforced armor protections, a defense industry source told TASS on Tuesday.
"The advanced VST-2 armor alloy has been introduced into the modules," the sources said. "It affords the modules better protection over earlier-developed alloys." The source did not specify the protection level of the Epokha. According to him, the VST-2 provides a 10% increase in armor protection over the steel analogs, while keeping the module’s current weight unchanged. The VST-2 lean titanium alloy was developed by the Steel Research Institute (a subsidiary of Tractor Plants) and VSMPO-AVISMA to reduce the cost and retain the strength characteristics. The alloy has a lower content of expensive alloying components replaced with low-grade types of titanium sponge, titanium scrap and waste. This led to a reduction in the material’s thermal stability, with its ballistic resistance remaining the same. The prime cost of the VST-2 alloy is on average twice as low as that of high-strength titanium alloys, which increases its armor protection applications. |
