In 1981, the KIFV (Korean Infantry Fighting Vehicle also called K200) project was born after a request from the South Korean army for a new armoured personnel carrier able to perform a full range of combat missions. The KIFV entered production in 1985 and by mid-2003 it is estimated that over 2,000 vehicles, including variants, had been built for the home and export markets.
The layout of the vehicle seems verys similar to the US AIFV and FNSS ACV with the driver at the front of the vehicle, engine at the front right, and troops compartment at the rear. The hull of the KIFV is of all-welded aluminium armour with an additional layer of spaced laminate steel armour bolted to it. The standard version of KIFV is fitted with a one-man manual turret armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun. With the new CMI Defence Cockerill Protected Weapon Station (CPWS), the two companies would like to offer a new variant of the KIFV with more firepower. The CPWS is designed to incorporate the 20 mm to 30 mm calibre automatic gun that best meets the user’s needs. The list below gives a few examples: CPWS20 with 20mm cannon, CPWS25 with 25mm cannon (ATKM242, Nexter or Oerlikon KBA) or CPWS30 with 30mm cannon (ATKM230LF). The CPWS station is also equipped with a 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun and can accommodate various additional systems such as grenade launchers. The ammunition rack system has a total capacity of 150 distributed munitions, in two types of munitions depending on the weaponry. |
