Italy-based company Elsel chose IDET 2015 to present for the first time its new LIVET (Live Vehicular Turret). LIVET is a light dual gun remotely operated stabilized weapon station that enables gunners to accurately engage targets while safely inside a vehicle. Despite of its low weight and small size, it's able to mount two weapons of customer choice for maximum firepower (e.g. both a 50MG and a 40AGL or lower calibers), giving the capability to effectively engage lightly armored targets.

The wide variety of installable weapons make LIVET standard choice for various vehicles/platforms with different mission profiles. The weapons integration comprises several different combinaisons of weapons, e.g. : 7.62 mm + 5.56 mm; 12.7 mm + 7.62 mm, 14.5 mm + 7.62 mm, 12.7 mm + 40 mm AGL, 14.5 mm + 40 mm AGL, 12.7 mm, 7.62 mm, or 14.5 mm single gun.
The turret can be easily mounted almost everywhere thanks to the completely flat bottom with no protruding parts inside the hull of the vehicle. The system includes a sensor suite and a fire control computer that allow on-the-move target acquisition and first-burst target engagement, providing the offensive advantage to rapidly identify, assess and engage the enemy at maximum standoff distances. The entire system is made up of only three components: the turret (equipped with optronic head), the ballistic computer (with 10" color monitor) and the gunner cloches: the open architecture allows further improvements and customization. The optronic head features, in its standard configuration, two daylight cameras, daylight DRI for 2.3x2.3 NATO target, thermal imager type Microbolometer, thermal image DRI for 2.3x2.3 NATO target, and laser rangefinder type EyeSafe Class 1. |

The gun aiming and fire are controlled by joystick and trigger on the right cloche, allowing the full weapon control with just one hand.
The traverse and elevation angles are unlimited (traverse nx360°. elevation limited only by the weapon interference with the hull; typical values being +70°/-20°) making it especially suitable for MOUT (Military Operation In Urbanized Terrain) and mountain operating scenarios. The two weapons are mounted on independent elevation gears and it is possible to aim at the target with the optronic head while introducing a remarkable ballistic angle on the opposite weapon (eg. 40 AGL). Every control axis (the traverse and the two elevation) is provided with a multi-turn absolute encoder providing accurate angular position with respect to the platform, thus allowing the control of the weapons from an external director (e.g. for naval applications). For non-tactical air/sea transportation, the turret could be removed and stowed in less than 10 minutes. The monocoque structural design maximizes the torsional strength to weight ratio: the same shell provides both protection to the inside mechanical and electronic components and structural stiffness. The body is made of Ergal (strong 7075-T6 aluminum alloy) to provide a low initial weight; ballistic steel or kevlar plates can be easily added to the flat faces to provide a higher level of protection. The body is completely sealed (IP55), it could be used without any concern in amphibious or naval applications and can be washed or decontaminated with no concern. Finally, all the components are ITAR/EAR free so there are no special export restrictions. With all these characteristks, the LIVET will provide a baseline for a common armament platform to be used with different weapons across a variety of vehicles reducing the total ownership cost. |
