Both vehicles represent a new type of military land transport for the Russian army. It's neither an armored personnel carrier, nor a military truck. In the West, these vehicles are called MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles). They are not present in the zone of active fire - they just deliver troops to the border of battle fields, but there are strict requirements to these vehicles.
They must withstand 7.62 mm incendiary bullet shots from Dragunov sniper rifles and large-caliber machine guns. The passenger capsule for both Typhoons is capable of withstanding a mine or torpedo explosion of at least 8 kg TNT. Its modular architecture makes it possible to use vehicles for transporting soldiers and setting various modules - medical, HQ, multiple launch rocket system and others. Depending on the modification, it is possible to install a remotely operated machine gun on the roof of the vehicle. So far Typhoon vehicles are available only as 6?6 wheel drive, but both car factories plan to produce a shortened version (4x4) and an extra-long version (8x8). In the latter case, the vehicle can be used as a carrier for the Pantsir AA defense system. |
