"The Iranian party will withdraw the suit as soon as the contract enters into force and we’ll fulfill our obligations," said the head of the defense product exporting company, answering a question. At the moment the countries are in talks over a new contract.
Russia and Iran had signed the previous contract to supply five battalions of S-300 in 2007. However, in the autumn of 2010 Dmitry Medvedev, the then Russian Prime-Minister, banned the supply of those systems to Teheran. A more than US$ 800 million contract was abrogated and the paid advances returned to the Iranian party. Iran lodged a suit of nearly US$ 4 billion to the Geneva Court of Arbitration in connection with the default on the agreement. In the spring of 2015 Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban to supply S-300 systems to Teheran. Russia is currently modernizing the S-300 missile defense system for Iran and hopes it will be able to deliver the system to Tehran, the head of Russia’s largest arms exporters said on Tuesday, October 27, 2015. "The completion of the contract on the S-300 missile system for Iran was suspended and we’ve been given the order to renew work and as the executors, we are doing this, but much time has gone by and the S-300 system has changed so we’re working on the modernization of the system,” Rosoboronexport General Director Anatoly Isaikin told journalists, Sputnik reported. Isaikin said that he was sure the contract would now be honored. The S-300PMU2 is the latest generation of S-300 family surface-to-air defense missile system manufactured in Russia by the Company Almaz-Antey. The S-300PMU2 Favorit (NATO code SA-30B Gargoyle) can engage targets flying from 10 m to 27 km above the surface at a speed of up to 10,000 km/h. It is claimed that it has a kill ratio ranging from 0.8 to 0.93 against aircraft and from 0.8 to 0.98 against Tomahawk-class cruise missiles. |
