About 20 new Tornado-G multiple artillery rocket systems have been adopted by the motorized rifle forces of the Eastern Military District to replace the Grad systems,” Mr. Gordeev said, adding that combat effectiveness of the new Tornado-G rocket system is 2.5-3 times greater than that of the Grad rocket system.

Thanks to the higher power of munitions and a new automated targeting system, the Tornado-G considerably outperforms its predecessors in terms of tactical and technical characteristics,” the spokesman concluded.

The first practical firing exercises will be conducted in the first quarter of this year.

The Tornado-G MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System ) is an improved version of the standard Russian-made 122mm BM-21 rocket launcher system based on a Kamaz or Ural-4320 truck. The Tornado-G has been made to be full automatic. Operating crew has been reduced to three man compare to the six man crew of the BM-21 Grad.

The Tornado-G is equipped with a bank of 40 launch tubes 122 mm arranged in a rectangular shape that can be turned away from the unprotected cab. The rocket tube arrangement is a single rectangular bank of four layers each with 10 tubes.
