"I am convinced that we will receive a modernized anti-ballistic missile defense system in the imminent future," Cheburin said in an interview with Russian News Service radio station adding that the system would provide anti-ballistic missile defense for Moscow in any situation.
According to Cheburin, Russia is currently upgrading interceptor missiles to improve their characteristics. This year, the Russian anti-ballistic missile defense large unit launched an interceptor missile at the Sary-Shagan range successfully, Cheburin said. "We also detected and tracked all the ballistic missiles launched from our continent," the officer said. CEO of the Almaz-Antey air defense system producer Yan Novikov said earlier that Russia was testing an advanced anti-ballistic missile defense system. However, the A-135 Amur system, which was developed in the 1990s, has no analogs in the world by a number of parameters and is currently being used to provide air defense for Moscow and the Central Industrial Region. Moscow’s anti-ballistic missile defense system is a unique system that allows defending the Russian capital from any ballistic missile. "Today this is the sole system in the world able to intercept any ballistic missile with a full set of anti-missile defense penetration aids attacking Moscow from any direction," Cheburin said. Moscow’s anti-ballistic missile defense system is a complex system comprising two main types of weapons, the officer said. "Moscow’s anti-ballistic missile defense system is a complex automatic system comprising both information and fire weapons," Cheburin said. "Elements of the anti-ballistic missile defense large unit are operating the anti-ballistic missile defense system and are responsible for its combat readiness," he added. Moscow’s anti-ballistic missile defense system is working in cooperation with missile attack warning and space control systems. Almaz-Antey General Designer Pavel Sozinov said in December 2014 that the Russian Armed Forces would receive Russian-made analogs of the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) and Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD) systems. According to Sozinov, Russia is currently developing a mobile analog of the US GMD system. |
