Russian towed mortar 2B23 Nona-M1 received a new high-explosive munition
The Russian-made 2B23 Nona-M1 towed mortar has received a new mine, CEO of the Precision Engineering Research Institute (TsNIITOChMASh), part of Russia’s state hi-tech corporation Rostec, Dmitry Semizorov said on Wednesday.

The works were conducted during the second stage of the upgrade of the Nona-M1 mortar and the Nona-S self-propelled artillery system, the CEO added.

"The Nona-M1 mortar has received a new munition. Now the weapon has a projectile with an enhanced high-explosive effect," Semizorov said.

According to the TsNIITOChMASh CEO, the projectile blast wave’s kill probability is twice as higher compared to analogous organic munitions.

The round is used in other artillery systems of the Nona family. "Units are currently being armed with promising munitions," Semizorov said.

The 2B23 120mm Nona-M1 towed mortar was made operational with the Russian Armed Forces in 2007. The mortar has a weight of 420 kilograms, a barrel length of 2,800 millimeters and a firing rate of 8-10 rounds per minute depending on munition types.

The 2B23 Nona-M1 towed mortar has a maximum firing range of 7,200 meters using high-explosive mines and a maximum firing range of 12,800 meters using rocket-assisted projectiles.

The 2B23 Nona-M1 towed mortar is furnished with the MPM-44M sight. Its crew totals five.
