The two international peacekeepers were wounded when their vehicle hit an IED and the four American ones were hit with a second device while attempting to rescue the first. Pentagon officials mentioned that the troops were wounded and later evacuated, for treatment having suffered non-life threatening wounds. They US peacekeepers belong to the 1st Battalion, 112th Cavalry Regiment, of the Texas Army National Guard. The battalion has 600 soldiers currently deployed at the Sinai Peninsula as part of the Multinational Force and Observers mission, monitoring the 1979 Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel. The attack comes at a time when the Obama Administration is evaluating the security situation in the area, fearing that the force could become a target from ISIS extremists. Under this condition, the administration is considering an increase in the heavy equipment to better protect the force, although the option of a full withdrawal is still on the table. |
