In 2009, Otokar was awarded as the prime contractor for Turkey’s main battle tank ALTAY’sain battle tank ALTAY’s design, development, production, and prototyping. This stage known as Phase I with a 500-million USD budget includes “Conceptual Design”, “Detailed Design”, and “Prototype Development and Qualification” stages.Having successfully completed the first two stages, Otokar has produced four prototypes, two preliminary and two final. Based on the feedback obtained from the first two preliminary prototypes, the final two prototypes, namely PV1 and PV2, were completed at the end of 2014.

Serdar Gorguc, General Manager of Otokar, which is solely responsible for managing ALTAY’s design, prototype production and qualification in agreement with other project partners, explained the current status of the project: “ALTAY Main Battle Tank will be owned fully by the Republic of Turkey with all design and intellectual property rights at the completion of the project, and in terms of reducing Turkey’s dependence on foreign technologies, it is a very significant technological symbol."

ALTAY will be one of the world’s most modern main battle tanks when it is included in the Turkish Armed Forces inventory. The project continues as planned. Our first preliminary prototype successfully completed the durability tests. The second preliminary prototype carried out hundreds of firing tests with very successful results at the Sereflikoçhisarfiring range. Using the data obtained from these preliminary prototypes, we produced the final two prototypes for the project. Of these two, the PV1 tank will be tested by Land Forces Command and the Undersecretariat for Defence Industriesfor mobility and durability, and PV2 tankis to be used for firing qualification tests. Testing of the PV1 tank commenced in April. The PV2 tank exhibited at IDEF will be ready shortly for System Qualification and Acceptance Tests.”

Otokar’s responsibilities include producing the preliminary prototypes for the project, subjecting them to engineering development/verification tests, and in the last phase, producing the Altay tank prototypes with final configurations, and delivering them to the Undersecretariat for Defence Industries after they are qualified through firing/non-firing tests. The company also coordinates all the subsystem design, production and integration work carried out within the scope of the project.
