The demonstration vehicle on which the system is fitted is a commercial pickup truck, but the final platform will be an armored military vehicle. The system combines Will Burt's SPM Spindel mast with an L3-Wescam MX RSTA optronic sensor at the top and an Inertial Navigation System (INS) box underneath. The SPM mast can bring the payload up to 6 meters high. It was chosen for its exceptional stability. The range of camera is 20 kilometers (depending on weather conditions). The sensors and INS data are processed by a software (designed by a New Zealand company called HDT) in order to recalibrate the ballistic data. The UAE artillery unit is looking to procure 65 military vehicles fitted with the Forward Artillery Observer Vehicle system and they are looking to procure a complete system. Depending on the vehicle ultimately chosen, Will Burt could decide to use its Stilleto mast instead of the SPM but so far the final platform is still unknown.SPM Spindel mast with L3-Wescam MX RSTA optronic sensor and Inertial Navigation System box
Designed by Will-Burt's German subsidiary GEROH, the SPM Telescopic Spindle Masts is used by the German Army and other international forces to enhance capabilities like communication, security, surveillance, reconnaissance and detection of targets throughout the battlefield. GEROH's Spindle Mast Systems are developed for the highest requirements in precision and high payloads. Made of specially treated aluminium tubes, these mast types are excellently suited for optical / electronic intelligence, monitoring and target recognition as well as electronic warfare systems. |
