India has started talks with Russia to upgrade 1,000 T-90S main battle tanks.

India has started talks with Russia to upgrade 1,000 T-90S main battle tanks to increase mobility and firepower. According to Internet sources, the talks began on March 17-18 in New Delhi where India’s Defense Ministry was holding a relevant conference involving Russia.

Since 2001, Indian army has ordered more than 1,000 T-90S, the export version of the Russian-made T-90 main battle tank. According to the Russian news agency Sputnik, India negotiates with Russia for the purchase of 464 T-90MS and upgrade 850 existing main battle tanks T-90S.
This new upgraded T-90S will be fitted with thermal imaging night vision cameras and some additional countermeasures to reduce the chances of being hit by adversary's anti-tank semi-automatic guided weapons. An upgrade of the T-90S was started including uncooled thermal imager-based driver's night sight (DNS) with fusion technology offering to the driver night operations capabilities. This tender of the upgrade was issued in December 2016 to replace the existing image intensifier sights used in T-90S tanks over the next five years. The upgraded tank will also provide more accuracy. The T-90S called Bishma in the Indian army is similar to the Russian-made T-90 tank but with more powerful engine. It is also fitted with a new armour and equipments as a jamming system and a laser warning receivers. The main armament of the T-90S Bishma consists of one 125 mm 2A46M smoothbore gun, stabilised in two axes and fitted with a thermal sleeve. A coaxial machine 7.62 mm PKT is mounted to the right side of the main armament and a 12.7mm air defense machine gun is fitted to the top of turret. |
