Romania has ordered more General Dynamics Piranha III 8x8 armoured vehicles
General Dynamics European Land Systems has been awarded a contract to deliver a fifth batch of additional PIRANHA III 8x8 wheeled armored vehicles to the Romanian Armed Forces. The serial production of the Piranha III started in 2006 with a first delivery in 2007.

The vehicle supply contract, signed on December 30, 2016, is part of the Romanian Army’s plan to modernize its legacy wheeled armored vehicle fleet. PIRANHA vehicles have been successfully in service with the Romanian Armored Forces since 2006 and have proven its capabilities in various missions in country and abroad.
 
“The Romanian Army is a very important PIRANHA user for General Dynamics European Land Systems and we are honored by this contract award as it reflects the high confidence and satisfaction of the Romanian Army in this vehicle,” said Dr. Thomas Kauffmann, Vice President International Business & Services of General Dynamics European Land Systems.


To meet an Urgent Operational Requirement (UOR), Romania placed a contract with MOWAG of Switzerland for a total of 31 Piranha III (8×8) armored vehicles with deliveries running from 2007 through to 2008. The order was placed in May 2007. The Romania Piranha III is fitted an 12.7mm unmanned turrets supplied by Elbit Systems of Israel, who provided the driver's thermal viewer and other electro-optic systems.

With more than 11,000 systems fielded, the PIRANHA is one of the most successful 8x8 wheeled armored vehicles in the world.

The Piranha III is a family of wheeled armored vehicles developed by Mowag Motorwagenfabriken of Switzerland.

The third-generation Piranha family is based on a new lightweight hull design with increased variable ballistic protection and higher performance in terms of payload versus gross vehicle weight and increased useable internal volume.
