"During the mine-clearing operation in Syria, we have used advanced mine-detecting equipment for the first time. The equipment will be put into operation in the imminent future," Stavitsky said. According to him, the equipment used in the mine-clearing operation in Syria has shown its effectiveness.
"We have also tested advanced combat engineer protective gear that will be delivered to the Russian Armed Forces, in particular, engineer units, this year as well," the general said. According to him, robots and sniffer dogs were widely used in Syria. "All this allowed accomplishing assigned missions as quickly as possible and preventing losses," Stavitsky said. As the Defense Ministry’s press office said earlier, Russian combat engineers demined 1,514 hectares, about 2,000 buildings and 140 kilometers (87 miles) of roads in the historical part of the ancient city of Palmyra on March 8-April 20. In all, 6,600 explosive devices, including 630 improvised explosives, were detected and deactivated. The mine-clearing operation involved more than 150 Russian combat engineers and 17 items of special hardware. |
