The contract will enable BAE Systems to continue producing AMPVs at its facilities in York, Pennsylvania, with an estimated completion date of February 28, 2026. This crucial step ensures that the U.S. Army forces will have access to these vehicles to meet future challenges on the battlefield.

The AMPV is developed by BAE Systems, which won a contract for the program in 2014. It was planned that the AMPV would come in several variants to fulfill different roles on the battlefield, including a general-purpose vehicle, a mission command vehicle, a mortar carrier, and medical evacuation and treatment vehicles. The program was initiated due to the age and obsolescence of the M113 armored personnel carrier, which had been in service for over half a century by the time the AMPV program began. The AMPV is intended to be better protected and more survivable than the M113, and it's designed to operate alongside the M1 Abrams tank and the M2/M3 Bradley fighting vehicle on the battlefield.

The AMPV is designed to fulfill a wide range of missions in the field. The platform can be equipped with a diverse set of armaments to adapt to different situations. Depending on the requirements, it can be armed with M249 5.56mm caliber machine guns, M240 7.62mm caliber machine guns, M2 12.7mm caliber machine guns, or the MK-19 40mm caliber automatic grenade launcher. Additionally, the AMPV is capable of carrying a 120mm caliber mortar for indirect fire support.

The AMPV is equipped with explosive reactive armor on the front and each side of the hull, providing additional protection against enemy projectiles, missiles, and short-range attacks. Weighing between 34,000 and 36,000 kg, the AMPV is powered by an engine that allows it to reach a maximum speed of 54 to 61 km/h. The Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle has a range of 362 km and its dimensions are as follows: a length of 6.4m, a width of 3.2m, and a height of 2.2m.

Furthermore, the AMPV is also equipped with a Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical (NBC) protection system, an air conditioning system, a night vision system, and an integrated fire suppression system. The AMPV has a seating capacity to accommodate a crew of 2 and up to 6 soldiers in its troop transport version (APC).

The $119.7 million contract for the production of Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicles marks a significant milestone in enhancing the operational capabilities of the U.S. Army. The AMPVs will offer increased protection and superior mobility to troops deployed in the field, thus strengthening security and effectiveness in military operations. The partnership between BAE Systems and the U.S. Army will play a crucial role in achieving this goal, and the world eagerly anticipates the impressive results of this collaboration in the years to come.
