Colombia to purchase at least 20,000 Sig Sauer SigPro SP 2022 9mm pistols.
According to InfoDefensa on November 24, 2023, the Colombian National Police (PNC) has recently announced plans to acquire a significant number of Sig Sauer SigPro SP 2022 pistols, totaling between 20,000 and 25,000 units, all chambered in 9x19mm. This acquisition aims to address two primary needs: the replacement of 7,000 decommissioned SP 2022 pistols and the alleviation of a persistent shortage of 15,000 units that the PNC has faced for an extended period.

Since its adoption in 2006, the Sig Sauer SP 2022 has been a standard issue in the PNC's arsenal. Initially anticipated to have a ten-year service life, these pistols have surpassed expectations. Despite exceeding its intended operational lifespan, the PNC has decided to continue using the SP 2022 due to its perceived operational reliability. However, the upcoming replacements will be units of the latest generation, specifically those produced from the year 2023 onward.
One distinctive feature of the Sig Sauer SP 2022 is its safety mechanisms. Unlike pistols with manual safeties, the SP 2022 incorporates a comprehensive set of safety measures to prevent accidental discharges. These include four distinct safeties, a hammer release lever, a trigger bar disconnect, an automatic firing pin safety, and a notch for intercepting the hammer, preventing it from striking the firing pin even when in a loaded position. According to weapons expert Javier Miranda, these safety features are advanced enough to withstand falls without unintentional discharges.
Chambered in 9x19mm, the Sig Sauer SP 2022 pistol operates in both double-action and single-action modes, with trigger pressures of 4.5 kg and 2.0 kg, respectively. The pistol has a length of 18.8 cm, a height of 14.5 cm, and a width of 3.6 cm. The barrel measures 9.90 cm, with a sight distance of 14.98 cm. The weight of the magazine is 818 grams, and the magazine has a capacity of 15 rounds. The pistol features contrast metal sights, black polymer grips, a metallic black frame, and an additional Picatinny rail for accessory attachments.
The Sig Sauer SP 2022 pistol is part of the broader SIG Pro series, a line of semi-automatic pistols developed and manufactured by SIG Sauer. Notably, it stands out as the company's first polymer-frame handgun, featuring a built-in universal accessory rail and interchangeable grips. The series offers variants chambered in .40 S&W, .357 SIG, or 9x19mm Parabellum.
