Poland could soon order 160 Korean K9 PL self-propelled howitzers.

| 2023

According to a tweet from Jarosław Wolski dated November 27, 2023, the Polish army is on the verge of announcing its intention to acquire approximately 160 K9 self-propelled howitzers in their Polish version. This decision follows the urgent need to replace all of its 2S1 Goździk self-propelled howitzers. This is part of a broader program that includes the acquisition of 48 new Krab and 362 South Korean K9 self-propelled howitzers in 155 mm caliber over the next two years.

The decision of the Polish army is set against a backdrop where lessons learned from the conflict in Ukraine have highlighted the critical importance of artillery. The war has demonstrated that artillery losses can be significant, thus underscoring the importance of an approach focused on both quantity and quality. Additionally, there is a strategic concern that by 2027-2028, Russia could regain its ability to conduct large-scale operations outside Ukraine, motivating Poland to strengthen its defensive capabilities.

The modernization of the Polish artillery is also driven by production challenges and the need to standardize artillery calibers. The transition from 122 mm to 155 mm, more standardized within NATO, ensures better ammunition availability.

The K9 PL, derived from the South Korean K9 chassis, is a self-propelled howitzer equipped with a 155 mm gun and a 12.7 mm heavy machine gun, offering impressive firepower. The vehicle provides effective protection against 14.5 mm caliber armor-piercing shells and 152 mm artillery shell fragments, thus offering increased safety to its crew of five.

Weighing 46,300 kg, the K9 PL is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 67 km/h. With a range of 360 km, it can operate effectively over long distances. Its dimensions, with a length of 7.44 m, a width of 3.4 m, and a height of 2.73 m (to the top of the turret), give it an imposing presence on the battlefield.

The K9 PL is also equipped with various modern systems, including a CBRN protection system, heater, internal and external communications systems, a manual fire suppression system, and an automatic fire control system. These features make the K9 PL a major asset in the modernization of Polish artillery.

The Polish defense sector plays a key role in this modernization. In addition to the production of Krabs, a portion of the ordered K9 PLs will be "krabified," incorporating superior technologies and components from the Krab. Starting in 2027, there is also a plan to launch the production of Krab II, which will benefit from experiences gained in Ukraine, with increased automation and reduced crew numbers.

This initiative to modernize Polish artillery, focusing on the acquisition of K9 PLs and Krabs, demonstrates a well-thought-out and responsive defense strategy. It reflects not only an effort to remain at the forefront of military technology but also anticipates future security challenges. With these new artillery systems, the Polish army strengthens its position as a credible and modern force within NATO.
