Danish Army upgrades Piranha and CAESAR with Leonardo camera systems.

During the DSEI 2023 exhibition in London, Leonardo secured a contract with the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) to equip 309 vehicles of the Royal Danish Army with advanced camera systems. The contract, valued at over £10 million (approximately €11.6 million), will enhance the capabilities of the Piranha V 8x8 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and CAESAR 8x8 self-propelled howitzer.

The camera systems are designed to provide vehicle crews and drivers with improved situational awareness, especially in challenging environments. Leonardo's vehicle camera system features a modular, cross-platform design that includes high-resolution infrared (IR) night vision cameras, daylight cameras, user displays, and IR illuminators. The system is compliant with the UK-led Generic Vehicle Architecture (GVA) standard, facilitating integration with other platform video sources and sensors.

The camera systems will be installed on multiple variants of the Piranha V vehicles, including infantry, engineer, repair, mortar, command post, and ambulance configurations. The Caesar 8x8 ART artillery platform and additional fleet spares are also covered under the contract.

The CAESAR 8x8 is a self-propelled artillery platform distinguished by its mobility and firepower. Equipped with a 155 mm/52-caliber gun, it can fire up to six rounds per minute and has a maximum range of 40 to 55 km, depending on the type of ammunition used. The vehicle also features advanced navigation and targeting systems, allowing for rapid deployment and high accuracy. The Caesar 8x8 can carry a crew of five and has modular armor for enhanced protection against ballistic and chemical threats.

The Piranha V 8x8, on the other hand, is a versatile Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) designed for a variety of roles, including infantry, engineering, and command. It is equipped with a diesel engine that allows it to reach speeds of up to 100 km/h on roads and about 10 km/h in water, thanks to its amphibious capabilities. The Piranha V can carry up to 13 people, including the driver and commander. It also offers multiple turret options and is designed for maximum protection against mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and ballistic threats. The vehicle is also adaptable for integrating various mission and communication systems, making it an ideal platform for modern operations.

This latest contract is an extension of a framework agreement established in 2016 between Leonardo and DALO. The agreement aims to provide modular vehicle mission systems tailored to various types of Royal Danish Army land vehicles. Deliveries under the new contract have already begun.
