Recently, Spectra Group announced the procurement by the UK (United Kingdom) MoD (Ministry of Defense) of Troposcatter Compact Over-the horizon Mobile Expeditionary Terminal (COMET) systems and a comprehensive spares support package for 7 Signal Group and use by the UK’s strategic land warfare asset 3 (UK) Division.
Spectra Group has been collaborating extensively with the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) and its key capability units. Their joint objective has been to comprehend the escalating needs for expanded range, bandwidth, and data capacity to link strategic bases with field units during operations. In recent times, Spectra Group has participated in comprehensive dialogues, showcased its capabilities, and engaged in various adaptive command experiments. These efforts, aimed at highlighting the advantages of their Troposcatter technology, led to an $8 million contract for 3 (UK) Division. This procurement through the NATO catalog exemplifies the MoD's swift response using the Rapid Acquisition Team approach. It also echoes the Chief of the General Staff's vision of leveraging modern tech for forthcoming challenges rather than past ones.
Troposcatter is a compact, efficient, high-capacity data link that leverages the Troposphere for communication, without relying on satellites or GPS/GNSS. This makes it apt for Peer-on-Peer confrontations, seamless inter-domain coordination, and collaborations with both government and allied entities. Its standout features include minimal latency and broad bandwidth, facilitating the processing of substantial data. This, along with its portability, makes it ideal for sizable field bases, such as 3 (UK) Division, and smaller mobile units, even at the company level. Unlike traditional geostationary satellites, Troposcatter is effective even in the polar zones. Its directed transmission, low energy consumption, and intricate wave patterns make it inconspicuous, meeting several contemporary challenges faced by the UK Defence and NATO.
The SlingShot system by Spectra Group is a communication solution that transforms commercial UHF and VHF radios into tactical Satellite Communications (SATCOM) devices. Essentially, SlingShot extends the range of regular radios by allowing them to connect via satellites, ensuring that users can communicate over vast distances and challenging terrains where traditional communication means might falter.
SlingShot is popular with various defense, security, and emergency services organizations globally, providing a reliable communication tool for various scenarios like remote operations, disaster response, and more. The system is lauded for its ease of integration with existing equipment, making it a cost-effective solution for extending the capabilities of current communication systems.
The portable nature of the SlingShot system means that it can be rapidly deployed, providing critical communication capabilities wherever they're needed. This makes it an invaluable tool for teams operating in remote or challenging environments, ensuring that they remain connected at all times.
