The UK MOD has identified the data as a significant resource for national security. The CMD program, initiated in 2021, focuses on the collection of digital information related to cybernetics. This data aims to enable the UK to predict, prevent, defend, and recover from cyber-attacks. The increasing volume of this data has led to challenges in extracting actionable insights, requiring specialized data analysis and visualization skills.

Under the CMD contract, Leonardo will offer data science and visualization services. The company has expertise in advanced sensors that collect data and the analytical skills needed to interpret the collected data. These services will be provided by Leonardo's data practice based in Bristol and will also involve an ecosystem of trusted providers and SMEs across the UK. This contract marks the third that Leonardo has been awarded since 2022 to support the MOD's Defensive Cyber Operations (DCO) strategy.

Leonardo holds certifications from the UK National Cyber Security Center (NCSC) for risk assessment and management in enterprise information technology and operational technology. The company has met the professional requirements set out by the NCSC and has the relevant Certified Professional Qualifications (CCPs). Leonardo's approach to security encompasses both physical and digital aspects, and the company uses technological innovations such as machine learning and cloud services.

The Leonardo contract announcement at DSEI 2023 is part of the UK MOD's ongoing efforts to strengthen its cyber capabilities. The collaboration aims to provide the UK Armed Forces with more accessible data resources for preparation and engagement in cyber operations.
