The IRIS-T system, known for its effectiveness, is expected to significantly strengthen Latvia's airspace defense, offering a robust response to aerial threats, including enemy aircraft and drones. With a strike range of up to 40 kilometers and capable of engaging targets at altitudes of up to 20 kilometers, the IRIS-T system stands as an asset in the Latvian military arsenal.

The IRIS-T SLM is a medium-range air defense missile system, designed and developed in Germany. Weighing 87.4 kg and measuring 2.94 meters in length, the IRIS-T SLM missile has a speed capable of reaching Mach 3, allowing it to quickly engage and neutralize aerial threats.

What sets the IRIS-T SLM apart is its advanced guidance system, which uses infrared homing. This technology allows the missile to accurately track and engage heat-emitting targets, such as aircraft and drones, making it extremely effective in a variety of combat scenarios.

The effectiveness of the system is further enhanced by its integration with various radars and command vehicles. This includes the Saab Giraffe radar, the multifunction radar CEA Technologies CEAFAR, the multifunctional radar TRML-4D, and the Airbus Tactical Operation Centre. Additionally, it incorporates Terma A/S technology and the Oerlikon Skymaster combat control system. These components work together to provide comprehensive detection, tracking, and engagement capabilities, ensuring that the IRIS-T SLM can effectively operate in diverse and challenging environments.

According to the planned schedule, the delivery of these sophisticated air defense systems will begin in 2026. In preparation, Latvia is set to undertake an extensive phase of personnel training and infrastructure modernization. These efforts are crucial to ensure that the National Armed Forces are fully equipped and prepared to operate and maintain the IRIS-T systems upon their arrival.

This acquisition follows a framework agreement signed in September between Latvia and Estonia, highlighting a collaborative effort to strengthen the regional defense of the Baltic States. The joint procurement strategy is not only cost-effective but also promotes improved coordination between the two nations in their defense operations.

The integration of the IRIS-T system into the Latvian defense network is a key element of the country's goal to develop a multi-layered air defense system. This system is designed to provide comprehensive protection, with each layer enhancing the overall resilience against potential threats.
