Latvia and Estonia sign protocol for joint purchase of Iris-T SLM air defense systems.

| 2023

On 11 September 2023, Latvia and Estonia signed a protocol of understanding for the joint purchase of the Iris-T SLM (Surface-Launched Medium-range) air defense systems. This agreement comes at a critical time when the Baltic states are increasingly concerned about their security, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Designed in Germany, the Iris-T SLM is a medium-range air defense system equipped with a missile weighing 87.4 kg and having a length of 2.94 meters. One of the most remarkable features of this system is its speed, which can reach up to Mach 3. This high speed allows it to quickly respond to rapidly evolving aerial threats. The missile is fitted with a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, and its guidance system is based on infrared homing.

As for its range, the Iris-T SLM can target objects up to 40 km away. This extended range makes it suitable for defense against medium and long-range aerial threats. The system is also compatible with a variety of radars and command vehicles, including the Saab Giraffe radar, the multifunctional CEA Technologies CEAFAR radar, as well as the Oerlikon Skymaster combat control system, and Terma A/S. This versatility in radar compatibility enhances its ability to integrate into various air defense scenarios.

The decision by Latvia and Estonia to jointly purchase the Iris-T SLM system is influenced by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Germany has already supplied several Iris-T units to Ukraine, where they have been primarily used to protect Kyiv from Russian missile attacks. The system has proven effective, with a success rate of nearly 100%, shooting down more than 110 targets, including cruise missiles and drones. The increased demand for the Iris-T system is also reflected in Germany's plans to ramp up its production due to Russia's war in Ukraine.

Spain has extended its rotation of the NASAMS (National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) air defense unit in Estonia until December 2023. This extension aims to strengthen NATO's deterrence and defense posture in the Baltic states. The Estonian Defense Forces have already gained experience in the tactical command of medium-range air defense systems thanks to the Spanish NASAMS unit.

The joint purchase of the Iris-T SLM system by Latvia and Estonia is a strategic move to enhance their air defense capabilities. This decision is not only a response to the immediate security concerns posed by the conflict in Ukraine but also a long-term investment in the defense infrastructure of the Baltic states.
