Russian Armed Forces test redesigned K-16 Boomerang APC.
As reported by The Dead District on November 23, 2023, a recent image from an undisclosed Russian military training ground showcases the ongoing testing of the K-16 "Boomerang," the latest 8x8 armored personnel carrier intended to replace aging Soviet-era counterparts like the BTR-80 and BTR-82. The vehicle is currently undergoing acceptance testing before its expected induction into service by the end of the year.

According to the picture, noticeable features of the redesigned Boomerang include a reinforced and slightly redesigned front hull, and the sides of the vehicle appear to accommodate two additional triangles between the axles, possibly serving as storage boxes.
Russian state media previously reported that the K-16 APC, along with its infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) variant called K-17, would undergo acceptance trials. The conclusion of these trials is scheduled for the end of the year, after which the Boomerang-based combat vehicles are expected to receive approval for mass production.
Crewed by three individuals – a commander, gunner, and driver – the K-16 has the capacity to carry nine soldiers. According to Russia's Defense Ministry TV channel "Zvezda," the vehicle's armor is designed to withstand tank blasts and is equipped with machine guns and anti-aircraft weaponry.
The Boomerang platform, which faced developmental challenges, including structural deficiencies and the need to replace foreign equipment due to supply limitations, is positioned as a modernized replacement for the BTR series, intended to play various roles in military operations.
Two variants of the Boomerang platform are highlighted – the K-16 APC, armed with a 12.7mm heavy machine gun, and the K-17 IFV, featuring a remotely controlled weapon station armed with a 30mm automatic cannon and Kornet-EM anti-tank guided missiles. The Boomerang platform is versatile, designed to serve multiple roles, including armored transport, ambulance, command post vehicle, reconnaissance vehicle, anti-tank missile carrier, air defense missile launcher, fire support vehicle, and mortar carrier. Future versions may include a light tank and a self-propelled gun.
The Boomerang platform is amphibious, equipped with two waterjets, and features a front-mounted engine, addressing previous drawbacks associated with the BTR series. The vehicle's protection is ensured by ceramic armor and technologies to prevent shell splinters. A 750 hp turbocharged diesel engine powers the Boomerang, providing the necessary mobility and capability.
