Currently, on display at the Partner 2023 exhibition in Serbia, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Serbia recently announced the introduction of the Mistral 3+ man-portable air defense system (MANPADS). This short-range air defense missile system is designed to operate either independently or mounted on a Zastava NTV, a multi-purpose all-terrain vehicle that entered service with the Serbian army in 2016.

The Mistral 3+ is a fire-and-forget air defense missile, boasting a success rate of nearly 95%. Equipped with an infrared imaging seeker and advanced image processing capabilities, the Mistral has excellent resistance to countermeasures. It is capable of engaging targets with low heat signatures such as drones and turboprop missiles at long range, in addition to conventional targets such as weapon aircraft and helicopters.

The system is also equipped with a lightweight and portable launcher, making it extremely versatile for various deployment scenarios. It can be easily transported and operated from the ground, a vehicle, a building, or even a ship. Normally, the Mistral MANPADS requires a gunner and a crew commander to operate effectively. However, in simpler tactical environments, a single soldier can manage an operation.

One of the key technical aspects of the Mistral 3+ is its highly maneuverable rocket. This feature allows the system to effectively engage fast-moving aerial targets. The missile's homing head is another notable component. It was designed to increase the probability of detecting targets at longer ranges and offers high resistance to passive and active jamming techniques.

In terms of technical specifications, the Mistral 3+ has a maximum range of over 7,5 kilometers and can hit a target at an altitude of over 6,000 meters. The missile itself has a length of 1,860 mm and a caliber of 90 mm. The mass of the rocket is 19.7 kg, while the mass of the warhead is 2,95 kg. The system uses a fuse near or at laser contact and employs a thermal detector for its seeker head.
