Spain orders Israeli PULS rocket launcher for SILAM army program.
On October 10, 2023, the Spanish government took a significant step toward modernizing its military by deciding to procure a locally-produced version of the PULS artillery systems for its High Mobility Rocket System (SILAM) program. This decision follows the Spanish Council of Ministers' approval of a €714 million contract and is in line with Spain's wider defense objectives and commitments to NATO.

The PULS is a mobile rocket and missile launcher system designed by the Israeli company Elbit Systems to meet the needs of modern artillery in modern battlefield scenarios, providing a cost-effective solution for the precise firing of advanced rockets. The autonomous advanced firing systems enable efficient management of firing missions, providing constant availability of massive and effective fire support in all weather conditions. The flexible platforms easily interface with local or third-party products and C4I systems.
The Israeli company, Elbit Systems, is prepared to offer a technology transfer to locally produce the PULS, mounted on a specific truck using the defense technology of the Spanish companies Escribano M&E who will be involved in the manufacturing of the vehicle, while Expal will be in charge of producing the ammunition.
The PULS system is known for its versatility and adaptability. It can fire a wide range of both unguided and guided rockets, as well as missiles, and can be configured to fire any type of rocket or missile currently available in the military market. The system's adaptability allows it to meet various operational needs quickly, making it a valuable asset in today's rapidly evolving combat environments.
The locally manufactured version of the PULS system is expected to retain these advanced features while possibly incorporating specific customizations to meet the unique requirements of the Spanish Army. The system's precision, extended range capabilities, and minimized risk of collateral damage make it a fitting choice for modern conflicts where civilian safety and the minimization of collateral damage are high priorities.
The versatile PULS launcher is equipped with two pods, each capable of firing both unguided and guided rockets, as well as missiles. Each pod is specifically tailored to hold a particular type of rocket, such as the Accular 122mm (18 rockets) with a reach of up to 35 km, the Accular 160mm (10 rockets) extending up to 40 km, the EXTRA (4 rockets) extending up to 150 km, and the Predator Hawk (2 rockets) with a striking range of up to 300 km. The system is capable of accurately and effectively neutralizing targets at any range. It is engineered to deliver maximum response and flexible firing options without necessitating system modifications. A standard firing mission can be accomplished within a minute of initiation.
The SILAM project is focused on both the present and the medium-term future of the Spanish Army's rocket artillery capabilities. Plans are underway to equip the 63rd Rocket Artillery Regiment with at least one, and ideally two, groups. Each group will consist of three batteries, divided into two sections, each with two Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) launchers. This configuration would result in a total of 12 rocket launcher units per group.
The Spanish government's decision to opt for a locally manufactured version of the PULS system for its SILAM programme marks a significant milestone in the modernization of the country's military capabilities. With its advanced technical features, the system is poised to become a cornerstone of Spain's artillery capabilities, offering a unique combination of range, precision, and versatility that will likely be invaluable in future conflicts.
