The construction of the Ivan Gren landing ship started
in 2004, but has been delayed due to a lack of financing and skilled
workers.
The ship construction is still way behind the schedule despite reassurances by the navy’s commander, Adm. Viktor Chirkov, that the vessel would be commissioned by the end of this year. The $160 million vessel has a displacement of about 6,000 tons and will be able to carry up to 13 main battle tanks or 36 armored personnel carriers, or 300 naval infantry troops. Under the terms of the construction contract for Pyotr Morgunov, the landing craft must be ready for delivery to the Russian Navy by 2018. |
