“The frigate conducted the first firing of its Uran system, which had been installed during the modernization process,” said the Russian MoD.
The naval platform previously carried out its first artillery firing against aerial and surface targets in the Peter the Great Gulf, employing an A-190 naval gun and an AK-630 30 mm close-in weapon system. The torpedo armament of the ship was also tested.
The Project 1155M large anti-submarine warfare ship 'Marshal Shaposhnikov' was laid down in 1983. During the modernization, it was qualified as a frigate. The upgrade has resulted in the integration of new artillery, Uran anti-ship missiles, and Kalibr cruise missiles.
The Project 1155M is armed with two AK-130 130 mm naval guns, eight SS-N-22 'Sunburn' anti-ship missiles, 64 VLS (Vertical Launching Systems) cells for SA-N-9 'Gauntlet' surface-to-air missiles, two Kashtan CIWS (Close-In Weapon Systems), eight 553 mm torpedo tubes for SS-N-16 'Stallion' anti-submarine missiles and two RBU-12000 anti-submarine rocket launchers.
The Uran is a Russian turbojet subsonic cruise anti-ship missile based on the Zvezda Kh-35. The Uran missile has a rocket booster and can be launched from helicopters, surface ships, and coastal defense batteries. It is designed to destroy missiles, torpedoes, gunboats, surface ships displacing up to 5,000 tonnes, and seagoing transports. The cruise flight phase is controlled by an inertial navigation system to keep the missile on the preset path and to steer it to the target area. Terminal guidance is provided by an ECM-resistant active radar seeker.
The Uran missile has a weight of 610 kg, a length of 440 cm, and a diameter of 42 cm. The missile is equipped with an HE (High Explosive) fragmentation warhead of 145 kg. It has an operational range of 300 km for the upgrade version.
