These frigates, aimed at replacing the Royal Australian Navy's ANZAC class, are part of a broader strategy to enhance anti-submarine warfare capabilities, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region where a significant presence of submarines is anticipated by 2030.
The Future Frigates, based on the Global Combat Ship-Australia (GCS-A) design by BAE Systems Australia, a variant of the Type 26 frigate used by the UK Royal Navy, will serve multiple roles.
Emphasizing anti-submarine operations, they are designed to work both independently and within various group formations. The frigates will incorporate a range of technological advancements, including a low acoustic signature hull, sophisticated sonar systems, and the MH-60R combat helicopter, enhancing their effectiveness in anti-submarine roles.
Additionally, these frigates will be equipped with the Aegis Combat Management System, CEA phased array radar, and an arsenal of missiles like the Standard Missile II and Evolved Sea Sparrow Missile, enabling them to perform in air warfare roles. Their capabilities also extend to supporting amphibious groups and engaging in surface warfare.
In terms of armaments and sensors, the frigates will feature the Australian CEAFAR2 Phased Array Radar, a combination of sonar systems, a Mk41 Vertical Launch System, and other weaponry. The propulsion system will include a Combined Diesel Electric or Gas (CODLOG) setup, allowing for speeds exceeding 27 knots and a range of over 7000 nautical miles.
Designed to accommodate a crew of approximately 180, with facilities for up to 208 personnel, these frigates have a length of 149.9 meters, a beam of 20.8 meters, and a full load displacement of about 8800 tonnes.
