NVL Group lays keel for Bulgaria Navy's second MMPV.

According to information published by NVL Group on June 22, 2023, the second multipurpose modular patrol vessel (MMPV) for the Bulgarian Navy marked its beginning with a traditional keel-laying ceremony.

The ceremony was graced by the attendance of figures from the political scene, Navy, local businesses, and the newly appointed Defense Minister, Todor Tagarev.

These MMPVs, under the careful watch of the German NVL Group and with contributions from many Bulgarian suppliers, are coming to life at the MTG Dolphin facilities in Varna.

These vessels, each about 90 meters long with a displacement of roughly 2,300 tons, are designed based on a tried-and-tested NVL blueprint. They are equipped with an integrated combat management system, enabling them to respond to threats from the air, land, and both above and below the sea surface. This makes them well-suited to carry out tasks within NATO and EU international alliance missions.

The construction of the second MMPV started in December of the previous year. As the project moves forward, both vessels will now be visibly worked upon simultaneously, adding an extra layer of complexity and excitement for everyone involved in the design and construction process.

In the ceremony, a customary practice was observed where a brass plate, with four coins signifying the Bulgarian Navy, NVL Group, MTG Dolphin, and the event, was affixed to a wooden block and placed beneath the keel block. This traditional ritual is believed to usher good luck for both the ship and its future crew.
