Description
The Poprad is an anti-aircraft mobile missile launcher designed and manufactured by the Polish Defense Company Elektronika, a subsidiary of Polish Defence Holding. The POPRAD self-propelled anti-aircraft missile system is intended for fighting low and medium altitude air targets with heat-seeking missiles. POPRAD is a short-range anti-aircraft system capable of destroying air targets at low and middle altitudes, using homing guidance missiles. It is suited for interoperation in an automated air defense command and control system, from which the data of targets to be engaged are acquired via digital links. The high dynamic performance of the tracking head makes it possible to engage fast and maneuvering targets. The POPRAD missile has been selected by the armed forces of Peru to be the next generation of short-range air defense system. Indonesia has bought Poprad launch station as a part of the Kobra short-range air defense system. In December 2014, the Polish army has announced a positive result for the field tests of the Poprad missile launcher. The tests have been executed within the period between 15th September and 21st November 2014. The achieved results are positive and the system has been certified to be safe to use. In the future, the Polish armed could acquire 79 Poprad vehicles, in accordance with the “Plan of the Technical Modernization of the Polish Armed Forces within the Period between 2013 and 2022”.
Poprad Zubr P variants:
The Poprad surface-to-air missile launcher can be based on a wide range of military cross-country vehicle chassis. Its mechanical design makes it easily adaptable for installation on many types of carriers, tracked or wheeled.
Technical Data
-
Armament
The Poprad is fitted with a turret mounted at the rear of the Zubr 4x4 light armoured vehicle. The turret is armed with four GROM missiles ready to fire. In road position, the launch station is lowered at the rear side of the vehicle and protected by armour plates. The Poprad carries a total of eight missiles, 4 ready to fire and four inside the vehicle. The GROM missile can hit a flying target at a distance from 400 m to 5.5 km and from an altitude of 10 m minimum to 4 km maximum.
-
Design and protection
The POPRAD uses the AMZ Zubr 4x4 armoured chassis to carry the missile weapon station. This version of Zubr vehicle is called Zubr P. The engine is at the front, the cew compartment in the middle and the cargo carrier area at the rear. The Poprad has a crew of two including commander and driver/operator. The forward part of the crew cab is fitted with a two-piece bulletproof windshield. There is one single door on each side of the vehicle. The Zubr provides protection according to Stanag 4569 Level 4 for ballistic protection (7.62mm armour piercing rounds) and level 3a/3b protection against anti-personnel mines (8 kg explosive under any wheel or track location). The V-shaped hull deflects the blast impact of the landmines and IEDs away from the vehicle.
-
Mobility
The Poprad is motorized with an N60 ENT C Iveco Tector 6 cylinder common rail direct injection diesel engine coupled to a manual or automatic gearbox with six forward and one reverse speed. The engine develops a power of 202kW at 2,500rpm and a maximum torque of 930Nm at 1,250rpm. The Poprad can run at a maximum speed of 100 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 600 km.
-
Combat Equipment
Standard equipment of the Poprad includes electro-optical sensors with a thermal camera and laser range finder, fire control equipment, land navigation and north alignment system, communication and data transmission equipment, and power supply system with a power generator. An infrared (FLIR) camera has been used for target acquisition and tracking, enabling effective use of the system in day and night conditions. An IFF interrogator has been incorporated into the tracking head to minimize the possibility of mistakable engagement of friendly aircraft, which gives POPRAD the possibility of operating more autonomously in the battlefield.
