Description |
The Swiss MOWAG company designed and developed the Piranha amphibious multipurpose armored vehicle as a private venture. The Piranha vehicles feature high survivability, high mobility due to the use of wheels, low life cycle costs, high reliability, high availability, and easy maintenance. The Piranha II available on 4x4, 6x6, and 8x8 chassis are the second generation of Piranha vehicles. The hull has been stretched by an additional 290 mm for more interior space.

Variants :
|
It can accommodate a wide range of one and two-man turrets to fulfil different mission profiles such as personnel carrier, NBC reconnaissance, transport, command, ambulance, recovery, and mortar vehicles. The gun calibres suitable for Piranha II vehicles are from 0.5 inches (12.7mm) to 90mm.

Armament |
The main armament is normally installed in the centre of the hull. A variety of armament installations can be mounted, up to and including a 20 mm turret-mounted cannon, for example one or two 7.62 mm remote-controlled machine guns, a turret armed with an externally mounted 12.7 mm (0.50) M2 HB machine gun or a 20 mm turret. Late in 1986, MOWAG demonstrated the AGV-90 in Switzerland and France. This is essentially an improved MOWAG Piranha 8 × 8 fitted with the Giat Industries TS 90 Weapons Station. This is armed with the 90 mm gun with a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun. The 90 mm gun fires APFSDS-T, HEAT-T, HE, smoke and canister rounds with 18 ready rounds carried in the turret. A further 25 rounds are in the hull.
|
Protection |
The all-welded steel hull of the Piranha protects the crew from small arms fire and shell splinters. For increased battlefield survivability, the vehicle can be fitted with various types of armour systems.
|
Propulsion |
The Piranha II 8x8 can be motorised with three engine options, Detroit Diesel 6V-53T Silver developing 275 hp, Detroit Diesel 6V-53TA Silver developing 350 hp or Cummins 6 CTA 8.3 developing 300 hp. The engine compartment has been fitted with a new fire detection and suppression system. The 8x8 suspension is of the independent type with coil springs on the front axle and torsion bars on the rear. All wheel stations have hydraulic shock-absorbers.
|
Accessories |
All members of the family are fully amphibious, propelled in the water by two propellers mounted at the rear of the hull. Before entering the water a trim vane, which is stowed under the nose of the vehicle when not in use, is erected at the front of the hull. This is erected by the driver without leaving his seat. Optional equipment includes NBC system, air conditioning equipment and various types of night vision devices. For operation in deserts a special combustion air filter has been installed. An externally mounted spill winch is also provided.
