Tulpar Light Tank Drives Strategic Türkiye-Bangladesh Defense Partnership.

Bangladesh, as part of its military modernization strategy, is reportedly in negotiations with Turkish defense manufacturer Otokar Otomotiv ve Savunma Sanayi A.S. to acquire 26 Tulpar light tanks. These developments were highlighted during a press briefing by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and reported on X by Defres360 on January 3, 2025. This initiative represents a significant step toward strengthening the armored capabilities of the Bangladeshi military, addressing operational needs in a sensitive regional geopolitical context. The first deliveries are expected in 2025, reflecting Bangladesh’s intent to diversify its strategic defense partnerships.

Türkiye, with its growing presence in global defense exports, has established itself as a key player, particularly in South Asia. Its strengthened relations with countries such as Pakistan—through the sale of MILGEM corvettes, drones, and support for submarine modernization—have drawn varied reactions, particularly from India. Bangladesh’s potential acquisition of the Tulpar was discussed during a press briefing by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs. Responding to related queries, the ministry’s spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, reaffirmed India’s commitment to fostering constructive relationships based on mutual trust and sensitivity to regional dynamics while monitoring developments in its neighborhood.

The Tulpar is a modular tracked armored vehicle designed to meet both current and future operational requirements. Its modular design allows for multiple configurations, including a light tank, infantry fighting vehicle, troop carrier, reconnaissance vehicle, command and control vehicle, air defense vehicle, ambulance, and mortar carrier. With a gross vehicle weight ranging from 28,000 to 45,000 kg, it is powered by a turbocharged diesel engine producing between 700 and 1,100 horsepower, paired with an automatic transmission. Its robust torsion bar suspension and automatic track tensioning system ensure exceptional mobility across diverse terrains. The Tulpar also features an advanced electronic infrastructure, ARMAtronics, which facilitates the integration of mission-specific systems and real-time subsystem monitoring.

In terms of protection, the Tulpar offers solutions against threats such as mines, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and armor-piercing munitions, adhering to NATO STANAG 4569 standards. It is equipped with CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) protection systems and automatic fire suppression. Its modularity extends to its armament, enabling integration of manned or unmanned weapon systems, ranging from 7.62 mm machine guns to 120 mm main guns, as well as air defense and mortar systems. These advanced capabilities make the Tulpar an adaptable platform for modern armed forces.

The Tulpar light tank, developed by Otokar in collaboration with Italian defense firm Leonardo, was showcased in its latest configuration at the World Defense Show 2024 in Riyadh. This version features the HITFACT II turret by Leonardo, originally designed for the Centauro II combat vehicle used by the Italian and Brazilian armies. The turret is compatible with either a 105 mm or 120 mm smoothbore cannon, along with a coaxial machine gun. Additional options, such as a remote-controlled weapon station or a pintle-mounted machine gun, provide operational flexibility. The 120 mm L45 low-recoil gun supports NATO-standard ammunition, including armor-piercing and high-explosive rounds, offering superior firepower compared to the 105 mm version.

Initially developed as an infantry fighting vehicle, the Tulpar is built on a modular platform capable of supporting gross weights between 30 and 45 tons. Its light tank variant reflects evolving land force requirements, combining mobility, protection, and firepower to address diverse operational needs.

Türkiye has previously supplied Bangladesh with various military equipment, including Roketsan's TRG-300 and TRG-230 guided rockets, multiple rocket launchers, and TEBER-81/82 laser-guided kits for F-7BGI fighter jets. These defense exports highlight Türkiye’s growing role as a key supplier in the region.

Bangladesh and Türkiyeare fostering deeper defense relations, evidenced by numerous agreements and acquisitions in recent years. This collaboration enables Türkiye to consolidate its influence in South Asia, a region where it is enhancing its economic and strategic presence.

Türkiye aspires to become a leading global defense exporter by developing advanced military technologies and implementing a proactive commercial strategy. Companies such as Baykar, Aselsan, and Otokar, supported by the government, offer a wide range of products, from drones to armored vehicles and advanced weapon systems. These efforts have resulted in significant contracts with countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, reinforcing Türkiye’s international position. By leveraging bilateral relationships and addressing rising global defense needs, Türkiye aims not only to diversify its economy but also to affirm its strategic autonomy and leadership in the global defense industry.
